How much do dividends contribute to stock‑market returns?

A great deal over the long run. Since 1926, dividends have made up about a third of the total return of US equities, and around 75% of the S&P 500's return from 1980 to 2019. In Switzerland, the SMI rose about 72% from 2000 to early 2025 on prices alone, but about 240% with dividends reinvested.
