Why are central banks buying gold?

Mainly to diversify their reserves and depend less on the US dollar, given geopolitical risks and high US debt. Central banks bought more than 1,000 tonnes of gold in 2024, about a fifth of annual production. According to the European Central Bank, gold made up about 20% of official reserves at market prices in 2024, ahead of the euro (16%) and behind only the US dollar (46%).
