Investing concepts explained·9.10

Why does April often behave differently in the stock market?

April has been one of the strongest months: since 1950, the S&P 500 has gained about 1.5% in April on average, twice its average month of 0.7%, and the Euro Stoxx 50 about 1.9% since 1987. In the US, the second half of April is usually stronger than the first. Many private investors sell shares to pay their taxes before the 15 April deadline, and buying returns once it has passed.
